Description
Brassica is an important part of any food plot program. Feeding deer when the cold arrives and the snow flies is just what our brassica blend does. With forage rape, kale, tillage radish, and 3 varieties of turnips, our brassica blend has it all. We don’t use the ordinary turnips you can get at the local feed mills. We have done a lot of research and testing to find the best and biggest kale and forage rape leaves, turnips and radishes to use in our blend. When the first frost hits, the leaves of the plants start to get sweet, just the way deer like it! Even after all the green leaves are eaten , the plot will still be filled with large turnips and radishes for the deer to dig up and eat. Tons of forage from September until late winter for a lot less than the price of “big buck on a bag” seed companies brassica offerings. Just look at the picture. No other brassica blend can produce results like the Northwoods blend can. Better hope your neighbor isn’t using this! Seeding rate is 6 pounds per acre in late July to early September.

I planted this blend the last week of July. I cannot believe how well it has done. The plants are over a foot tall in about a months time. I went with a no till approach because I didn’t have a disc. I was a little worried I would not get good seed to ground contact. I ended up roughing the ground up with a tooth drag, broadcast the seed and then rolled it. I even did a test area with out rolling it in and the seed took off in that area. I put my trail cam up on the plot earlier this week. I can’t wait to see what type of deer this plot brings in.

I planted 1.5 acres of this mix last summer, along with red clover from north wood as well. I had soil test, and limed/fertilized as prescribed. Plot did extremely well, and took off right away. I used disc, and culti packed well. Took my deer a bit to get used to something new, and eat the brassicas themselves, but once they did, they absolutely loved it. Also a ton of rabbits in the plots. I was very happy, and just ordered more this year to work into my plot rotation. Love this companies seed, and will use them exclusively. We are in Berrien County MI.

Planted this the last week of July, a little bit early than I would have liked but it was the only option. After a month of growth it is really taking off and looking amazing for being planted in sandy dry ground. Planted in Iosco County Michigan.

Plated two 1/2 acre locations with this seed. The deer here never had brassica. They didn’t care. There was little forage left when the gun season started and the deer are already pulling the turnips & radishes. Planning for two acres in 2021!

Planted several acres of John’s Sweet Feast Brassica blend in southern middle TN in the 2020-21 season in slightly above average soil. The results were outstanding. No doubt I will be rotating it to the other half of my plots this year. Plots produced a tremendous tonnage of greenage and bulbs. Without question the best brassica blend I’ve used to date.

This is the first year we tried seed from Northwoods. We had great germination and they are growing very well. When I ordered the bag came open during shipping and I lost about 1/3 of a bag. I contacted John and he sent a replacement right away. Great customer service and I’ll be ordering this from now on.

First year I planted this in super sandy soil with horrible ph and very high deer browse pressure. I could not believe how well it did. Granted it was not a full forest of leaves, but there was plenty of leaves in the fall and bulbs left over in the winter for the deer to eat. The second year I drastically improved my soil (Lime, tilling, fertilizer) and planted this blend at the beginning of August and it was unbelievable all fall and all winter even on some of the worst soil there is!

Planted about 1.5 acres in Southern Michigan ag country in an old cow pasture. Got a good kill on weeds in April and another in mid July and threw this seed right on top of the dead thatch and some stubborn weeds. I am not 4 days out from opening day of bow season (Oct 1) and has nice big green brassica crop. No fertilizer (got to busy with life) no soil test other than a PH reader. Great product. Watch his video and take his advice about over seeding. A few areas I over seeded and the crop isn’t great (my own application mistakes). Couldn’t be more impressed with the results especially my first year doing it!

I planted this in the 2021 season on a new farm I had bought. I did a total of 2 acres. The ground had not been well maintained but I did fertilize it to give it a boost. The results were unbelievable. The crop was nearly waist high on me and I’m 6’2 by mid-October. Deer were all over this stuff. Follow up to this year, 2022, I decided to try and save a buck or two on the shipping bill and bought stuff locally and boy do I regret it. I have had almost a total failure. The extreme drought in central MO doesn’t help but the stuff I planted barely popped up and just stopped growing. Thank goodness for cereal rye but sadly my deer don’t have the brassicas they loved so much. I won’t make this mistake again, I’ll be ordering all my brassicas from Northwoods going forward.

I planted 2 identical ph/sun plots with this Brassica Mix Seed in Northern Illinois. I highly recommend it, and I am buying it again for this Aug 2023 planting.
Plot #1, is 3/4 acre, I had a spring cover crop of buckwheat, then on Aug 3, I seeded this Brassica mix right into it, rolled the field, and then sprayed Glyphosate. NOTE: It drizzled after I planted it probably 3 times…then it went bone dry for until Sept….. 4-5 weeks!
Bottom line. Plot#1 did great, and the 2-3 drizzles of rain were clearly enough to germinate; BTW: The Root turnips and radishes…folks they’re big. Thank you very much!
PS: I found myself over many does and bucks on this plot this fall. I also can confirm… right this moment, It’s Jan 30, 2023 and its 17F and 6” snow on the ground. My cams are buzzing: This field is filled with big fat bucks and does, all of them, nose in the snow, eating the root plants (softball and larger sizes).
I am so happy. This mix is providing TONS and TONS of food right now as well. And this spring, these deer are going to emerge from winter just fine. Thank you. It is just what I wanted. Ogle County, IL

I broadcast 1/2 acre by no till the first week of July 2021. Deer started hitting it as soon as it came up and continued until there was nothing left. I’ll plant the same this July 2023.
